Passing & Turning Drills
By Dave Chesler
PRIMARY FOCUS: TECHNICAL Focus. RECEIVE & TURN
Each activity emphasizes the mechanics of re-directing a ball &
turning to play forward. Repetition with the pressure of an opponent
creates an environment that tests the choice & quality of mechanics.
AGE LEVEL: U10-12
EXERCISE I: Double Pairs: Receiving & Turning
A. Players are grouped into 4’s with 2 balls per group.
B. Each group of 4 positions two players centrally and two servers on
opposite sides of the central pair.
C. One ball is served from each server to a central target player. The
serve is re-directed and the ball is passed to the opposite target player
on the second touch.
D. At regular intervals the servers and receiving players switch roles.
E. The coach/facilitator should change the expectation for the type of
turn on every rotation.
F. Key COACHING CONCEPTS:
• Move TO the ball to re-direct
• RE-DIRECT rather than stopping
• Use a body swerve or change of pace to DISGUISE intent.
• LOOK toward space before turning w/ ball.
• Fluid body movement…TURN WITH THE BALL.
