One thing that jumps out to me about Messi, is he keeps the ball very close to him, touching the ball with every step when he dribbles, but he will push the ball a few yards ahead of himself when he sees an open space or when there's a chance to break free for a shot. The ball is always on a string and he's able to push the ball further ahead with a burst of speed when there's an opening.
