The world cup is expected to be a show of the best players in the world playing against each other, and presumably resulting in top class football. However with each team now having played one game the results seem to be a little of the mark. The best players have failed to shine and most matches have been dire at best.
Now of course the world cup is not going to be cancelled but perhaps a revamp of the competition is needed. The group stages in general never really offer any form of excitment and perhaps need changing a bit perhaps lowering the number of points gained for a win would help and ensure teams were go all out to win all games for fear of being knockout.
It is also questionable about teams such as New Zealand taking part in the competition granted they managed to get a point from Slovakia but the game wasn't exactly compelling viewing. I think another initiative Fifa could take with regards to the world cup is to scrap the current regional qualification groups. Instead I propose a draw to which every team is placed and groups are drawn from this, seedings of groups can be done to ensure the more competent nations don't end up in one group. The result of this would be a world cup in which most matches would be must win games in order for teams to progress and as such a more open and attacking game would ensue.I am of course aware of the travel ramifications of this proposal however teams do not need to play in their own country if they are playng a team on the other side of the world. They can meet half way!
I believe it is criminal that teams like North Korea and New Zealand find themselves in the competition whilst the likes of Croatia and Russia are sat at home. I believe Euro 2012 will be more competitive and much more enjoyable and will have a higher quality of players on the whole I just wish SOuth America was classed as Europe too .
